AREAS OF RESEARCH INTERESTS

Green solutions for Insecticidal Hazards (Biopesticides Research)

Research areas of interest include Plant based anti-plasmodial agents, xenobiotics, insect growth regulatory agents (IGRs), molecular basis of reproductive toxicity with special reference to mosquitoes and also regeneration biology and stem cell research.

During the programmes, more than 150 plants having insecticidal (larvicidal, adulticidal, repellent, ovipositional deterrent etc.) properties were reported to the scientific world. The efficacy of essential oils from around 40 medicinal/ weed/ indigenous plants were also proved against the larvae and adults of different species of mosquitoes. In addition to this plant based insect growth regulatory agents and reproductive toxicants were also published. Currently focus on the mode of action and molecular basis of the reproductive toxicants and IGRs with special reference to mosquitoes. The team also investigates anti-plasmodial, antioxidant and anti-cancerous properties of plant based compounds and identified potential anti-malarial, anti-oxidant agents using standard biochemical and cyto-toxicological analysis selected medicinal plants.

Autotomy and Regeneration in Freshwater crab, Paratelphusa hydrodromous Herbst

Autotomy and regeneration studies conducted in the freshwater crab, Paratelphusa hydrodromous and the immediate changes in the cellular arrangement were observed using histological techniques and correlation is found between the regeneration and molting process in P. hydrodromous. Presence of stem cells in the regeneration buds is also identified with histological and histochemical studies. The RNA molecules were isolated during different time points of crab autotomy, Eye and Heart samples. The RNA samples were sequenced by NGS. The sequences are totally 8,85,39,791 raw reads for the Crab transcriptome sample. After  trimmed to 8,76,68,712 reads and from these 63,48,767 contigs was generated in the Fasta format and gene ontology for our dataset cellular process was highly involved in the Biological pathway process, the catalytic activity in molecular functions and finally cellular anatomical entity in cellular compound. The species distribution of the blasted contigs in our dataset highly similar species Penaeus vannamei was identified. In KEGG pathway crucially involved pathway as Signal transduction (15%), Endocrine system (8%) and Infective disease (7%) for crab transcriptome samples. In differential gene expression analysis, the totally 3147 was differentially expressed in this dataset 2736 genes were significantly up-regulated and 411 genes down-regulated were identified.

Molecular characterization and identification of the ticks with epidemiological significance

Diversity, prevalence and abundance of ticks in Wayanad wildlife sanctuary  and its ecotone habitat is another focus. Studies target to evaluate the presence of KFD virus in ticks of both niches under study using PCR and ELISA based methods and also focus on developing organic nanocomposites with potent inhibitory activity against KFD spreading ticks.
