Dr. Sandeep Das had been working on herpetofauna in the Western Ghats since 2010. His primary interests are amphibian and reptilian taxonomy and biology. His team had described around 18 species of amphibians and reptiles. He is also an EDGE Hero awardee of the Zoological Society of London, working towards the conservation of Endangered Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis.  He is also a trainer and committee member for the snake rescue and rehabilitation guidelines program by the Kerala Forest Department and several other committees and NGOs across the country.

Title of thesis:

‘Larvicidal efficacy of a few phyto-extracts and its synergistic effects with Cypermethrin against Aedes aegypti L., a dengue fever vector’.

My research is an attempt to explore the larvicidal activity of some selected phyto-extracts and its synergistic effect with some chemical insecticides against Aedes aegypti L., a dengue fever vector. It also involves the understanding of mosquito vector species around the study area through their molecular sequencing.

Title of thesis:

‘Molecular Characterisation and Diversity Analysis of Cultivable Gut Microbiota of Selected Mosquito Larvae from Thrissur, District, Kerala’.

The research focused on bacterial and fungal gut entities in different types of mosquito larvae. Due emphasis is given to the influence of various environmental parameters on bacterial and fungal communities available in the larval gut.

  Title of thesis:

‘Diversity and Habitat Characterization of Ticks in the Reserved Forests Under North

   Wayanad Forest Division, Kerala, India’.

The research is focused on analysing the diversity and molecular characterization of tick species in the reserved forests of the Wayanad district and examining how the habitat characteristics affect the tick populations in those areas in context with the emergence of Kysanur Forest Disease.

  Title of thesis:

‘ECOLOGY, EVOLUTION AND CONSERVATION OF LEAF LITTER HERPETOFAUNA IN SELECTED AREAS OF WESTERN GHATS, KERALA, INDIA’.

The research focuses on using evolutionary models to better understand the relationship between herpetofauna and their microhabitats. Insights from the study will help strategize more effective conservation of these animals in a world increasingly challenged by climate change.

  Title of thesis:

‘Diversity, Ecology and Evolution of Skin-associated Fungi in Amphibians across
Selected Microhabitats in Wayanad Landscape of Western Ghats
’.

The research is focused on analysing the diversity of culturable fungi on the skin of
amphibians inhabiting specific microhabitats in the Wayanad landscape of Western ghats.
Further I will be investigating the potential ecological and evolutionary associations of these
fungal communities to the amphibians as well as to the microhabitats where the amphibians
inhabit.

  Title of thesis:

‘COMPARISON OF VERTICAL TRANSMISSION OF THE COMMON GUT BACTERIA IN AEDES AEGYPTI (LINNAEUS, 1762) AND AEDES ALBOPICTUS (SKUSE, 1894)’.’.

The research investigates the gut microbiome of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus larvae by isolating, characterizing, and identifying the bacterial species present within the larval digestive tract. The primary focus of the study is a comparative analysis of vertical transmission of the prevalent bacterial species.

  Title of thesis:

‘Diversity and molecular characterization of tick species in different geographical locations of Wayanad Wild Life Sanctuary, Kerala, India’.

The aim of this research is to investigate the diversity of tick species from the area where the Kyasanur forest disease and Lyme disease were reported (Wayanad Wild Life Sanctuary). some of the tick species act as a vector for such kind of diseases. So, this study documenting the molecular characterization of tick vector with special emphasis on evolutionary relationship.

  Title of thesis:

‘Isolation, identification and characterization of bacteria and fungi from the gut of fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti (LINNAEUS, 1762) collected from kole wetlands by culture dependent and and metagenomic analysis’.

The research work investigates intricate bacterial and fungal communities within the gut of fourth instar Ae. aegypti larvae sourced from an underexplored habitat like Kole wetlands (Thrissur district). Our investigation employ a blend of culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques, revealing a diverse array of bacteria and fungi and focusses the inter and intraspecific genetic divergence between bacterial and fungal isolate..
