Endocrinology and Toxicology Research Laboratory
Our current research activities address specific concerns on the impacts of environmental contaminants on aquatic ecosystems. The laboratory is actively involved in the quantitative analysis of chemical contaminants in various tissue matrices using both conventional and modern techniques. We have identified the role of certain xenobiotics in the antioxidant defense system, and the molecular mechanism involved in the impairment of reproductive functions in fish. The role of some endocrine disruptors like phthalate plasticizers, chlordecone, fullerene C60 nanomaterials, and triclosan in the decline of sperm count mediated through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis contributed to the reduced fish population. We also apply fish genetics in combination with molecular, biochemical, and cytological approaches to address fundamental questions regarding the environmental stressors induced oxidative stress. Our research applies several fish species such as orange/ red chromide (Pseudetroplus maculatus), tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), climbing perch (Anabas testudineus), and mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) as laboratory models.
