Current Research

  • Geometric morphometric: Shape and size to function

Morphological plasticity (inter and intra-population disparities) and adaptations are unsolvable using traditional taxonomic and molecular techniques; however, from these points, we can use advanced geometric morphometric methods to overcome the current obstacle in morpho-structural analysis. Our lab worked on innovative and inexpensive technology, which reliably demonstrated that shape and size differences. This information can be used to reveal the various morpho-function nature of an organism. Our research in this field focused on the multiple perspectives on organism’s development and adaptations, such as population-specific characteristic features, host-specific adaptions, geographical variations, niche preferences, and inter-and intra-specific competitions, pest surveillance and forecasting, morpho-structural evolutions, morphology trait-based phylogeny, morphological integration, phenotypic structural modular evolution, cryptic complex speciation, quantitative genetics. Our research has primarily focused on a broad, comparative study of insect morphological, structural variations, with a particular focus on wing and body architectural variations, as well as host-associated morphological adaptations of mites. Our research used several empirical and theoretical models and multivariate statistical approaches to analyze the morphological disparities. In addition, we correlated these morphological variations with the specific needs of species. So far, we have investigated the morphological differences of many insect taxa including, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Odonata. In addition to the insect community, we analyzed the population structures of Bivalves and fishes with a particular emphasis on ecological conditions. Aside from the community level analysis, our research team discovered toxicity-specific morphological distortions and the effect of food on morphological developments with a focus on forensically important insects’ taxa.

  • Biomaterial characterization and their applications

Biomaterial engineering has enormous potential for the development and production of advanced functional and structural materials. Aquatic animal adhesive secretions (a protein- based natural biomaterial) can be utilized for various industrial and therapeutical applications. In a wet, saline, and highly turbulent environment, the unique nature of super hydrophilicity binds to a variety of solid surfaces. Therefore, biomimetic materials engineering has substantial potential for the development of advanced functional and structural materials. Ideally, these materials will be engineered using renewable resources and water-based processing strategies that closely mimic the green chemistry of biological systems. Our lab research focused on biomaterials from Bivalves; we used advanced, sophisticated instruments to characterize the biomaterials and a combination of biochemical and molecular techniques to understand the physicochemical properties of these biomaterials. Our research team is currently working on the Physico-chemical characterization of the byssus thread of native and invasive bivalves along the coastal belt of Kerala. We have already documented and sequenced the major adhesive proteins of three bivalve species, Perna Viridis, Perna Perna, and Mytilus strigata. We also studied and documented all mussel foot proteins' Physico-chemical structural and functional properties (78 mussel foot proteins from nine bivalve species, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020- 59169-y). Besides, we are concentrating on industrial applications of mariculture waste such as byssus thread and Bivalve shells. Understanding the fundamental properties of these mussel- derived biomaterials helps us to create advanced ecofriendly biomimetic materials.

  • Toxicology

Quantitative assessment of developmental toxicity and risk assessment in insect model.

  • Nutrients immobilization

Nutrients immobilization is an advanced green strategy in nutrients administration in soil. Minerals from the natural sources are converted or augmented to a slow leaching complex, a future promising fertilizer, and resource management.
